Historic Eufaula

Originally known as Irwinton for an early settler, the town's name was changed in 1843 to Eufaula for a branch of the Creek Confederacy that had lived in this region. Eufaula prospered as a shipping point to the north and east for cotton produced in the fertile Black Belt. In the late 1830s, 5,000 bales of cotton a year were shipped from Eufaula by steamboat and barges to New York, Liverpool, and other markets.

Eufaula is located in the Southeastern part of Alabama on the Georgia/Alabama state line. The city is situated on a beautiful 46,000 acre lake that is a reservoir of the Chattahoochee River. US Highway 431 runs directly through Eufaula bringing thousands of travelers from Atlanta, Georgia, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Asheville, North Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina to the Florida Panhandle.

Eufaula is known for its diverse amenities including:
• 46,000 acre lake with 640 miles of shoreline
• Over 700 structures listed on the National Historic Register
• 1,220-acre state park with hotel lodge, conference center, marina, and campgrounds
• 4 sites on the Alabama State Birding Trail located in parks and recreational areas
• 11,184-acre national wildlife refuge consisting of wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands
